VOC Analysis & Outgassing

A special application of organic analytics is the analysis of material outgassings, so called VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Almost all organic materials, including silicones, tend to show outgassing at temperatures above room temperature. Depending on their chemical properties these outgassings can be anything between harmless to destructive for the application in which they are used. Thus it is often crucial to check for material outgassing in development phases. But also for claim and failure analysis the knowledge of possible outgassings is often very helpful.

The range of services of the laboratory covers the following test methods:

TGA – Thermo Gravimetric Analysis

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is an analytical technique used to determine the thermal stability of a material and its fraction of volatile components by monitoring the weight change that occurs as a sample is heated at a constant rate.

TGA-FTIR – Thermo Gravimetric Analysis coupled with Infrared Spectroscopy

Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) coupled to Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) provides a quantitative assessment of the process via the TG curve and an identification of the decomposition products from the IR spectra of the evolved gases.

TGA-GCMS - Thermo Gravimetric Analysis coupled with Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry

Thermo Gravimetric Analysis coupled with Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (TGA-GCMS) is an hyphenated analysis technique use to detect very low levels of material (known and unknown) in complex mixtures.
